Macmillan Cancer Support
Practical help for one of the most valued charitable organisations in the UK
Each year in the weeks before Christmas members of the Rotary Club of Wakefield volunteer with others to collect donations from customers of the two Morrisons Supermarkets in the city.
In the weeks prior to Christmas 2007 these generous customers donated a staggering £4,677.46. It is estimated by a former local chairman of the charity (and a member of our club) that over 80% of this money was collected by our members. Both the club and the charity are very grateful to Wm Morrisons for their continuing support.
In August 2007 Wakefield's Macmillan Cancer Support became £1,775 better off after sharing the proceeds of the raffle run by Rotarians as part of the annual May Bank Holiday gala, which was held for the last time that year. The charity has been a regular benefactor of part of the raffle proceeds for several years and is likely to benefit from future raffles associated with the new Wakefield Arts Festival.
In 2002, with the co-operation of Low Laithes Golf Club in Ossett, a charity golf day for Macmillan Cancer Support, organised by the Rotary Club of Wakefield, raised over £1,100. In subsequent years this figure increased and the tournament was eventually passed to the charity's team of fundraisers to organise. We are pleased to note that it has gone from strength to strength. A good example of how Rotary is able to prime the pump for others in the community. JULY 2008 NEWS: This year's golf day at Low Laithes Golf Club raised a record £3,252. Thank you to the club and to all the generous people who contributed to the day's success.
