Michael Portillo at Cedar Court

MICHAEL PORTILLO LIGHTS UP CHRISTMAS AUDIENCE

Thought provoking, humorous and enlightening, Michael Portillo delighted an audience of more than 270 with over two hours of stories about his upbringing, history, his political offices, political intrigues, amusing moments and, of course, his highly successful venture into television, including his now famous incursions into the development of railways.

He was backed by Radio Leeds presenter Andrew Edwards, who acted as compere for the evening at Cedar Court Hotel, which began with the introduction of Matthew Burns, Wakefield’s first Admiral Nurse, shortly to be joined by a second nurse.

Early estimates suggest that £3,000 was raised which will be divided between Dementia UK for the funding of Admiral Nurses in Wakefield and other Rotary charities.

Our President-elect Sheila Wainwright received a well deserved bouquet of flowers for organising the event. Her son, Simon George, was thanked for guaranteeing funding through his company 6th Gear Experience, as well as providing a substantial raffle prize. The hotel was thanked as a sponsor as were other companies such as Blacker Hall Farm, which also donated raffle prizes.
